This index was created from the records kept at the Common Pleas Court. These records are very valuable for genealogists because they provide names, relationships and other "juicy" details, such as information about scandals.

The Chancery records are civil court cases that fall into three main areas:

    1. land cases: i.e partitions from estates and selling off land to pay bad debts
    2. bad debt/ bankruptcy cases
    3. divorce records (1844-1852) which sometime includes child custody cases
