The
tax map office is a
great resource to find property by using maps. There are four ways to
searches these records depending on what information you have to start with:
by sidwell number; by STR or VMD number from an old deed; by street / road name; or
by subdivision.
The sidwell number also known as a parcel ID number is very helpful in
identifying the needed map. Parcel ID 13353260060 is the sidwell number for
406 Justice Dr where WCGS is located. This number is usually divided into
segments and listed as such: 13-35-326-006-0. The first two numbers “13”
refer to the area number assigned for a specific township under the
government survey. It relates to a specific book where the property is listed. The second number
“35” refers to the section on that specific map where the property is listed.
The third set of numbers “326” is the block within that section. The fourth
set of number “006” is the parcel number for that block in that specific
section. The last number “0” is the auditor’s tax number. The maps are
organized into a grid system. Sometimes there are two sections on a specific
map.

If you are researching the number 08-19-302-008, the above map on the left
shows where area 08 is within the township where the property should be
located. The map on the right shows where section 19 is within area
number 08.
The map on the left shows sub-section 300 of section 19 in area 08. The map in the middle shows block 302 of the 300 parcel block sub-section 19 in area 08. The map on the far right is parcel #008 of block 302 of the 300 parcel block sub-section of section 19 in area 08. It can be further divided as shown.
The tax map books are very detailed and show specifically where a property is located, thus making it easier to track in the recorder's office.
If you have an old deed that lists the Section, Township, Range number, you will need to use the following chart to find the specific book for that piece of property. Many times the deed will provide enough details to find this information.

There is a Warren County map hanging on the wall in the map room that shows the Virginia Military District number and where to find records in those areas.
If
you know the street or subdivision for the property you want to search, then
you will want to use the indexes first. These are in two binders titled
“Street Index” and “Subdivision Index”.
There is a map index on the wall which is used for the Archive records for the
year of 1977. It is divided by township and then by book, i.e. Turtlecreek lists
books P, Q, R or S, then lists sections, township, range and page numbers for
each book. It also lists those locations that use the military district
numbers and their references.
Once you
have determined the specific book mentioned from the sidwell map index, you
can begin your search. There are four groups of books for the older maps: the
Virginia Military Survey books, the 1903 tax map books, the 1910 tax map
books, and the 1977 tax map books. The current maps are available on the
computers. Choose the specific year you want to search and pull the specific
book. Look under the “Description of Property” for the section you want, and
it will list the page within that specific book. The information you want
will be listed on the specified page. The entry will have a left and right
side to the page. The detailed map of the property is usually on the left
side with the owners name and amount of acres owned as well as other details
on the right side. The 1903 tax record book has marks on the property map for
the location of a home, church, and cemetery on that property. This is very
similar to what is found on other early maps such as the 1867 plat map. The
1910 map does not have marks like the 1903 map.
The recorder's office has two aerial book maps for 1903 and 1875 also.
