Location:

This cemetery is located within the city limits of Loveland in Hamilton Twp, Warren County, just north of the county line, north of the railroad right-of-way and just behind (south of) the building lots at the end of Sentry Hill Drive. Sentry Hill Drive is on the right (east) side of State Route 48 as you head north up the hill out of Loveland.

Cemetery History

This cemetery, about 3/4 of an acre in size, is one of the very early burial grounds in Hamilton Twp. According to deed records, John Hill [thought to be a Revolutionary War Veteran] obtained the property from Thomas Paxton. John Hill died in 1803 and was buried in this cemetery. The earliest known burial recorded in the cemetery was that of Elizabeth Hill, the wife of John Hill in 1800.

The farm containing the cemetery was passed on to John Hill's son, Benjamin Hill and when Benjamin died, it passed to his daughters Mary Ann E. (Hill) Cornelius and Susanna/Susannah Marie (Hill) Morgan. In 1849, the two daughters and their husbands sold about 3/4 acre of the land that was referred to as Hills Graveyard for $1 to "Robert Hill, William Ramsey and John Monroe in trust forever, for the use of a public place of Burial, free for all those who may desire to use it as such." We do not know if Messrs. Hill, Ramsey and Monroe held any official office at the time of the transfer - perhaps they were the township trustees. The last known burial in the cemetery was that of Jacob Michaels in 1878. This parcel is identified as account #2622742, Parcel ID 16073780030 in the Warren County Property Records with the owner listed as "CEMETERY".

They returned on 23 Sep 2005 and probed parts of the cemetery, uncovering a number of additional stones. All of these will be included in the 2nd edition of Warren County Cemetery Records, Volume 5.
