This online index only lists the individual, death date (if
known) and reference page. We are creating a master index of everyone who is
buried in this county and their burial location to aid researchers. We are
especially in need of people buried here who have no stones or whose stones no
longer exist. If you have any of this information or if you have additional information for anyone who is buried in
this cemetery,
please

Cemetery History |
The first known burial is for Josiah Terry who died in 1829. The cemetery is located between the property at 8714 and 8718 on Wilmington Rd. About 65 feet of the cemetery is on one property and 35 feet on the other property. It straddles both their properties. The owner said that prior to buying the property cattle were allowed to graze this land and many stones were toppled down. There are some very large trees marking the edges of the four corners of the cemetery but there is no fence in place. About 10 years ago they dug up the tombstones and placed them together in a group so it would be easier to mow the grounds. In Nov 2009, 18 tombstones & footstones were found. It is very likely that other stones are buried. The tombstone for Josiah Terry who is supposedly the first burial here in 1829 was not found but a footstone labeled "J T", which is believed to be his was located. Some of the surnames here are Fordyce, Terry, Jordan, Bogan, and Jones. According to Beers History of Warren County, Ohio, p. 706, “In the yard of Bethany Church (Baptist) is a public burying ground. The first civilized person buried in the township was a runaway slave from Kentucky, who was found sick in the forest by William Smalley, cared for by him and buried on the bank of Todd’s Fork from Smalley’s house in the fork of the Bull Skin and College Township roads. This was short time after Smalley settled, perhaps 1803 or 1804. The washing of the bank of the stream for years exposed the bones, and about 1860, the skeleton was exhumed by Dr. Francis M. Wilkerson and is most probably in his possession at this time.” |
