buried in this county and their burial location to aid researchers. We are
especially in need of people buried here who have no stones or whose stones no
longer exist. If you have any of this information or if you have additional information for anyone who is buried in
this cemetery,

Cemetery History |
Across the street from the Old Franklin cemetery. This cemetery was about a block wide and continued along the south side of Fourth Street to the top of the ridge. With the arrival of the railroad, the land became valuable commercial property. By 1876 some burials in Old Franklin were moved to this cemetery because of the canal right of way. Gradually bodies from Hillside were moved to the Woodhill Cemetery. By 1931 the City of Franklin decided to abandon Hillside Cemetery and sell the land. The last 150 bodies were moved to section 4A of Woodhill were the headstones were laid flat. These last removals from Hillside dated from 1807 to 1890 with more than half the deaths occurring from the 1840’s and 1850’s and at least a quarter of those being children under the age of five. On Friday August 27, 2010, the members of the Franklin's American Legion were digging to install a patio at the rear of the Legion building at 126 E. Fourth Street, in an area that used to be the location of the Hillside cemetery. They found a buried tombstone for John C. Snell, son of Robert and Hannah Snell who died 9 Sep 1841 aged 1 year 24 days. In memory of this baby, the Legion dedicated a small brass plaque to the baby which was fastened to the building door. Hannah Snell, wife of Robert T. Snell who died 5 Mar 1845 age 24 years 6 months and 23 days, was just one of the 200 tombstones moved from the Hillside cemetery to section 7 of the Woodhill cemetery. |
